Type 1 Diabetes Toolkit
Early screening, risk assessment, and educational resources for type 1 diabetes
In the United States, 2 million people have type 1 diabetes. This toolkit is designed to help both patients and providers understand who is at risk for type 1 diabetes, the benefits of early screening and detection, and what follows diagnosis.
Early Action Against T1D Starts with Screening
Early Detection
Early detection of presymptomatic type 1 diabetes (T1D) can significantly reduce the likelihood of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
Family History Risk
Individuals with a family history of T1D or known genetic risk should be referred for screening.
Autoantibody Testing
Testing positive for multiple islet autoantibodies is a significant risk factor for type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Regular Monitoring
Regular glucose monitoring is recommended for all patients who screen positive for early-stage T1D to reduce the risk for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
Preventive Treatment
Patients who screen positive for preclinical T1D may be eligible for preventive treatment to delay the onset of clinical disease.
